Senior Power BI Consultant (Contract, US-Based)
Smoother Consulting is a small, growing boutique consultancy specializing in Power BI, semantic modeling, and modern Microsoft data platforms. We work directly with executives, operations leaders, and analytics teams to build thoughtful, scalable reporting - not dashboard churn.
We’re looking for a senior Power BI consultant to join us as our first dedicated developer. This is a contract role to start, with the intention to grow hours quickly and the potential to convert to full-time as the business scales.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys ownership, client interaction, and shaping best practices - not just executing tickets.
What You'll Do (Immediately)
• Own front-end Power BI report development for active client projects
• Improve and maintain existing semantic models and DAX measures
• Build a polished Power BI demo report used in a public presentation on Power BI best practices
• Present walkthroughs and demos to clients and stakeholders
• Ask smart questions, make informed decisions, and flag tradeoffs early
What You'll Do (As You Ramp Up)
• Lead client engagements end-to-end (requirements → modeling → delivery)
• Run client meetings independently and push back diplomatically when needed
• Define and apply Power BI best practices around modeling, visuals, and performance
• Occasionally help diagnose upstream data issues (SQL, transformations, data quality)
• Contribute to internal standards, templates, and processes as we scale
What We're Looking For
You are a senior individual contributor who:
• Has strong hands-on experience with Power BI, DAX, and semantic modeling
• Understands and applies star schema design
• Can write solid DAX, debug context issues, and explain tradeoffs clearly
• Has experience with time intelligence and real-world business logic
• Is comfortable being client-facing with executives and technical teams
• Can work independently, meet deadlines, and communicate proactively
Nice to have (not required):
• Microsoft Fabric experience (semantic models, Lakehouse, Dataflows Gen1/2)
• Experience with DirectQuery and RLS
• Familiarity with GitHub / DevOps workflows
• Prior consulting or agency experience
Work Structure & Location
• Contract to start
• Initial commitment: 10–20 hours/week, with a goal to scale to 30–40 hours/week as projects ramp
• Fully remote, US-based required
• Strong preference for Greater Portland, OR / Vancouver, WA (occasional in-person collaboration)
• Flexible schedule with availability for scheduled client meetings
Compensation
• $75–90/hour, depending on experience and fit
• Opportunity to grow into a lead consultant role and potential full-time hire with benefits
Why This Role Is Different
• You’ll help shape how we build, not just build what’s asked
• Direct access to clients and real ownership of work
• Thoughtful, high-quality projects - not volume dashboard factories
• Exposure to Fabric and modern Microsoft data tooling as we grow
• Opportunity to become a core part of a growing consultancy
