This role blends analytical rigor with sound judgment, balancing risk exposure with profitable growth while maintaining strong wholesale broker and carrier relationships. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Sound Judgment & Decision-Making: Exercises strong analytical thinking to evaluate complex risk exposures, make informed underwriting decisions, and balance profitability with growth objectives. Attention to Detail & Accuracy: Thoroughly reviews applications, technical specifications, safety documentation, and regulatory compliance materials to ensure precise risk evaluation and documentation. Strategic Thinking & Market Awareness: Monitors loss trends, emerging risks, and market conditions to proactively adjust underwriting strategies and maintain a profitable book of business. Problem-Solving & Critical Analysis: Analyzes product types, manufacturing processes, supply chains, and quality controls to determine risk acceptability and develop appropriate coverage solutions. Collaboration & Interpersonal Effectiveness: Builds and maintains strong relationships with wholesale brokers, carriers, and internal teams. Communicates underwriting decisions clearly and professionally. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Risk Assessment & Underwriting • Analyze product types, manufacturing processes, supply chains, quality controls, and loss histories to determine risk acceptability. • Review applications, technical specifications, safety documentation, and regulatory compliance materials. • Evaluate exposures related to product design, distribution, labeling, warranties, and end-user behavior. • Determine appropriate coverage terms, conditions, endorsements, and pricing in accordance with underwriting guidelines. • Make informed decisions on new business, renewals, and endorsements. Portfolio & Profitability Management • Maintain a profitable book of business through disciplined underwriting and strategic risk selection. • Monitor loss trends, emerging risks, and market conditions to adjust underwriting strategies. • Collaborate with carrier's actuarial team to refine pricing models and ensure rate adequacy. • Participate in audits and internal reviews to ensure compliance with underwriting standards. Broker & Carrier Engagement • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers and carriers. • Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and professionally, including rationale for pricing or coverage changes. • Provide guidance to clients on risk mitigation strategies and product safety best practices. • Represent the company at industry events, broker meetings, and training sessions. Documentation & Compliance • Prepare clear, accurate underwriting files and documentation to support decisions. • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, internal policies, and industry standards. • Stay current on legal developments, product safety regulations, and emerging liability trends. REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES: Required • 5+ years' experience in commercial underwriting, preferably in casualty or product liability lines • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret technical information and loss data • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities • Proficiency with underwriting software, rating tools, and productivity platforms Preferred • Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, or AU • Experience underwriting complex manufacturing, life sciences, or high-hazard products • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as CPSC, FDA, or OSHA standards EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, risk management, engineering, or a related field • 5+ years' experience in commercial underwriting, preferably in casualty or product liability lines • Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, or AU preferred • Experience underwriting complex manufacturing, life sciences, or high-hazard products preferred
