About arenaflex and the Opportunity
arenaflex is a leading research‑focused institution dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the environment and its interaction with modern energy development. As a cornerstone of the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI) at arenaflex, we partner with industry, government, and community stakeholders to generate data‑driven insights that protect water resources, guide responsible resource extraction, and support sustainable land use practices.
We are currently seeking a meticulous, tech‑savvy individual to join our part‑time data entry team. This role centers on capturing, validating, and organizing water‑quality data associated with shale gas development and coal mining activities. The position begins in the upcoming fall term and offers the chance to grow into data analysis responsibilities as you become more familiar with our projects.
Why This Role Matters
The data you enter will form the backbone of critical research that informs policy, guides best‑practice recommendations, and safeguards drinking water supplies for millions of people. By ensuring that every measurement, field note, and laboratory result is accurately recorded, you directly contribute to
- Understanding contaminant pathways in groundwater.
- Assessing the effectiveness of mitigation technologies.
- Providing transparent, science‑based evidence to regulators and the public.
At arenaflex, we recognize that attention to detail is a form of stewardship – your work helps protect ecosystems and communities alike.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Entry & Validation: Accurately input water‑quality measurements, sampling locations, and observational notes into standardized Excel workbooks and Word templates.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct routine checks for missing fields, out‑of‑range values, and typographical errors; flag inconsistencies for senior staff review.
- Document Management: Organize source documents (field sheets, lab reports) in a logical digital filing system to ensure easy retrieval.
- Collaboration: Work closely with field technicians, laboratory personnel, and project managers to clarify data ambiguities and confirm methodological details.
- Reporting Support: Prepare basic summary tables and charts in Excel that highlight trends for weekly team meetings.
- Learning & Growth: As proficiency improves, assist with preliminary data analysis tasks, such as descriptive statistics and GIS data layering (optional).
Essential Qualifications
- Technical Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel (including formulas, pivot tables, and data validation) and Microsoft Word.
- Attention to Detail: Proven ability to maintain high accuracy when handling large volumes of numeric and textual data.
- Time Management: Ability to commit to at least 10 hours per week on campus, with a flexible schedule that can accommodate multi‑hour blocks during standard business hours (Monday–Friday, 8 am–5 pm).
- Communication Skills: Clear written communication for documenting data handling decisions and asking clarifying questions.
- Eligibility: Must be a current arenaflex employee (faculty, staff, technical service, or student) or a current arenaflex student who can apply through the internal Workday portal. External applicants can apply directly via the provided link.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – basic map layering or spatial data concepts.
- Experience with environmental data sets, particularly water‑quality parameters (e.g., pH, conductivity, heavy metals).
- Prior involvement in research projects, internships, or coursework related to environmental science, geology, or engineering.
- Background in statistical software (R, Python, or SPSS) for future analytical growth.
Core Skills & Competencies
- Analytical Mindset: Ability to spot patterns, inconsistencies, and outliers in data sets.
- Organizational Acumen: Systematic approach to file management and documentation.
- Reliability: Consistently meets deadlines and follows through on assigned tasks.
- Team Orientation: Comfortable working in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
- Adaptability: Willingness to learn new software tools (e.g., GIS, data‑visualization platforms) as project needs evolve.
Career Growth & Learning Opportunities
arenaflex is committed to professional development. In this role, you will gain:
- Hands‑on experience with real‑world environmental data that can be highlighted on your resume or CV.
- Mentorship from senior scientists and data managers who will guide you toward more advanced analytical techniques.
- Potential transition to a data‑analysis or research‑assistant position, with accompanying salary growth, as you demonstrate proficiency and initiative.
- Access to arenaflex’s internal training portals, including workshops on Excel advanced functions, GIS fundamentals, and scientific writing.
