Freelance Editor / Copy Editor (Contract, Remote)

McFarland, an independent academic and nonfiction publisher, is seeking experienced freelance contractors to provide editing and copy editing services on a project-by-project basis.
This is 100% contract work. Projects are assigned as needs arise and are paid hourly. Compensation is issued once per month, and freelancers are responsible for tracking and submitting their own hours.
Starting compensation: $18 per hour
This is a remote, contract position with a flexible schedule.
Responsibilities
• Edit and copy edit manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, spelling, clarity, and consistency
• Improve structure, readability, and overall flow of the text
• Ensure manuscripts meet professional editorial standards
• Apply editorial guidelines according to The Chicago Manual of Style
• Maintain consistency in formatting, citations, and references
• Meet clearly communicated deadlines for assigned projects
• Track hours worked and submit accurate monthly time records
• Communicate professionally with editorial staff regarding project details when needed
Qualifications
• Formal training or professional experience in editing, copy editing, proofreading, English, journalism, publishing, or a related field
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
• Exceptional attention to detail and strong command of written English
• Ability to work independently and manage deadlines
• Professional communication skills
Preferred
• Previous experience editing book-length manuscripts
• Experience with academic or nonfiction publishing
