Training & Role Overview
Direct medical admissions programs are a specialized niche, and we provide in-depth training and ongoing support for new counselors.
As a College Counselor, you will:
• Work independently with students through one-on-one Zoom meetings and offline essay editing.
• Be paired with a Lead Counselor for mentorship and support as needed.
• Lead all aspects of assigned student work, including college list creation, application guidance, essay coaching, and deadline management.
This role requires strong brainstorming and editing skills, as students may apply to 20–30 schools and complete 60+ essays.
Key Details
• Position Type: Part-time, 1099 contractor
• Schedule: Flexible, fully remote; evening and weekend availability required to accommodate U.S. high school schedules
• Workload: 10–25 hours per week depending on season
• Peak Season: October–January (including holidays)
• Lighter Season: Spring/early summer
• Commitment: Minimum of 10 students for new counselors
• Restrictions: Candidates may not work for direct competitors; all contractors sign a standard non-compete agreement
Responsibilities
• Develop four-year academic course plans with students
• Advise on academic profile enhancement and résumé/activity list building
• Create balanced college lists tailored to students’ goals
• Provide essay support for personal statements and supplemental essays
• Assist with application platforms (Common App, Coalition, UC, CUNY, SUNY, etc.)
• Guide students in résumé and activity list preparation
• Track and manage application deadlines
• Conduct interview preparation
• Maintain prompt email communication with students and families
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred)
• At least 5 years of professional experience in college admissions counseling or working directly with students on all aspects of the application process
• Direct Medical (BS/MD and BS/DO) experience required
• Strong writing, brainstorming, and editing skills
• Tech-savvy (Google Docs, Google Drive, Zoom)
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and busy holiday periods
• Ability to commit 10 hours/week during quieter periods and up to 25 hours/week during peak admissions season
Selection Process
• Submit proof of education and two professional references
• Provide writing samples and complete a practical essay-editing assessment (samples may include before/after essay edits, recommendation letters, blog posts, or articles)
• Complete a core competency interview
