Salary Information Salary is dependent on experience with a minimum of $54,208.30 (Assistant Librarian rank), $59,208.30 (Associate Librarian rank) and $66,208.30 (Librarian rank). Department Summary A wide range of student and faculty-centered services are the cornerstone of the Libraries' integral role in the University of North Texas community. As the most-used service on campus and an essential component of education and research at the University of North Texas, the Libraries offer access to an abundant collection of more than 6 million items (print and digital) along with expert personnel to assist patrons in achieving their academic and scholarly goals. We provide innovative and inclusive programs and support to enhance the intermingling of teaching, learning, and research at UNT. The Collection Management Division has three departments: Collection Development, Collection Assessment, and Cataloging and Metadata Services. Serving both internal and external customers, the division provides selection, acquisition, evaluation, cataloging, processing, and collection maintenance services for the collections of the UNT Libraries. The Special Collections department is a progressive and rapidly expanding department primarily located in the main campus library, Willis Library. The collection contains over 30,000 cataloged items and 15,000 linear feet of archival collections. It is home to many distinguished collections of materials such as artist's books, rare books, maps, ephemera, oral histories, photography and archival and manuscript materials including one of the largest LGBT archives in the state. Position Summary The University of North Texas seeks highly motivated, detail-oriented candidates with excellent communication skills to fill a position as a Special Collections Cataloging Librarian. This individual will be responsible for creating and maintaining catalog records and related data for monographs, serials, and archival collections in a variety of formats and will provide description and access to unique materials including early printed books, ephemera, graphic materials, maps, and three-dimensional objects. Librarians at UNT make substantial contributions to our profession through service and scholarly activity. The Special Collections Cataloging Librarian will be expected to make scholarly and professional contributions and provide leadership within the profession. Reporting to the Cataloging and Metadata Services Department in order to coordinate Special Collections cataloging within Library cataloging practices. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in library science or relevant degree in a related field. Familiarity with the cataloging of rare and special collection materials. Strong working knowledge of metadata standards and best practices, specifically RDA and MARC. Familiarity with Library of Congress classification and subject headings. Ability to perform complex analytical work and problem solve; flexibility; judgment; attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work productively and cooperatively in a complex environment while maintaining effective working relationships. Preferred Qualifications Cataloging experience in an academic library. An understanding of the unique role of primary source materials in today's research environment and their use by faculty, scholars, and students. Working knowledge of book and printing history, bibliography, and best practices related to rare and special collection materials. Familiarity with DCRM, related rare book resources and tools, and trends in rare book cataloging. Knowledge of at least one language other than English. Experience creating authority records. Knowledge of or experience with non-MARC formats and non-AACR2/RDA metadata standards.
